The Story

I made this photograph while wandering along Lake Creek outside of Twin Lakes, Colorado. It was fall, but the aspens were past their peak color transition. The leaves had started to let go. They fell from the trees, landed on the forest floor, and eventually found their way into the creek. Some floated downstream. Some caught on rocks. Some gathered in quiet pockets of water. That is what caught my attention. At first, an aspen leaf seems like an aspen leaf. Same general shape. Same familiar autumn story. But when you look closer, each one is different. As fall comes, days shorten and temperatures cool. The tree slows and then stops producing chlorophyll, shuts down the flow of fluids to the leaves, and forms a layer of cork cells at the stem. Eventually, the leaf breaks away. The greens, yellows, oranges, reds, purples, and browns each reveal something about where that leaf was in the process of dying and returning to the landscape. Each color reveals different stages of change and decay. Some were still holding onto green. Some had turned yellow. Others had darkened into orange, red, purple, and brown. They were all going through the same process, but none of them were going through it in exactly the same way, at exactly the same pace. I was thinking about how beautiful it is that no two things let go the same way. These leaves had fallen from the same forest and entered the same river, but each carried its own color, its own history, its own process of decay.

Print Material Information
All of Meredith's artworks are produced as giclée prints on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, a premier 100% cotton, archival-grade fine art paper that meets the highest museum and gallery standards worldwide. The front of each print is signed and the edition numbered in pencil. All prints have a slight sepia tone.

Meredith works directly, in person, with master printers in Denver, Colorado, overseeing every stage of the printing process to ensure the final work is of the highest quality possible. The materials used are among the most stable available and, when properly displayed, can last well over 200 years before any visible fading begins to occur. Prints are also sprayed with Hahnemühle Protective Spray to protect them from external influences and prevent color fading. This process ensures the best level of print integrity and longevity, allowing the work to be lived with and preserved for generations.
Limited Edition Guarantee
‍This edition size is shared between all prints, which means that if the edition is of 10, there will never be more than 10 prints made (not including artist proofs) of that image. Collectors can acquire any physical print size, but the total prints made will never exceed the edition number.

Artist Proofs: these exclusive artworks are typically the very first prints ever produced and reserved for family or specific collectors.
Certificate of Authenticity
Every limited edition print is signed and numbered by the artist and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, documenting its place within the edition and confirming its provenance. These works are produced in strictly limited quantities and intended for long-term installation in private and curated spaces.
Print Handling
Unframed prints are shipped rolled in a protective tube.

For best results, it is recommended that the unopened tube be taken directly to a professional framer, who can safely unroll, flatten, and prepare the print for framing.

Professional handling helps reduce the risk of creasing, surface marks, or damage to the paper.
Framing
All prints are are delivered unframed, allowing collectors and designers to select framing that best complements their space.

It is highly recommended that prints are displayed behind non-reflective museum glass and protect them from prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Framing can be arranged upon request. If you would like a framing quote or wish to discuss options, please note this when submitting your inquiry and I will be happy to review details and pricing with you directly.

To see how a framed piece may look in your space, email a room photo to meredith@meredithfontana.com and you will receive a custom preview.
