Chisos Morning
The Story
I made this photograph during a slow December morning while camping in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park. As the sun rose, narrow bands of light began tracing the volcanic rhyolite ridges, separating their shapes from the cool shadows and morning haze.
The Chisos are the remnants of volcanic activity that occurred between 38 and 32 million years ago. They are also the only mountain range located entirely within a national park.
Rising above the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert, the Chisos offer cooler temperatures and more sheltered habitat than the desert floor below. They are a refuge for wildlife and for people seeking relief from the heat and exposure of the extreme heat and harshness of the open desert.
What I was drawn to was the contrast between the ruggedness of the Chisos Mountains and the softness of the light. I loved the way the light played across the different shapes and forms created through millions of years of geologic forces. I could feel the sense of this place being a dry desert oasis; a sanctuary in the unforgiving West Texas landscape.
As a print, it brings that sense of refuge and peace into a room, along with the slow morning ease and sense of renewal that one feels waking up in the mountains to soft morning light.
Print Options
Meredith works directly, in person, with master printers in Denver, Colorado, overseeing every stage of the printing process to ensure the final work is of the highest quality possible. The materials used are among the most stable available and, when properly displayed, can last well over 200 years before any visible fading begins to occur. Prints are also sprayed with Hahnemühle Protective Spray to protect them from external influences and prevent color fading. This process ensures the best level of print integrity and longevity, allowing the work to be lived with and preserved for generations.
Artist Proofs: these exclusive artworks are typically the very first prints ever produced and reserved for family or specific collectors.
For best results, it is recommended that the unopened tube be taken directly to a professional framer, who can safely unroll, flatten, and prepare the print for framing.
Professional handling helps reduce the risk of creasing, surface marks, or damage to the paper.
It is highly recommended that prints are displayed behind non-reflective museum glass and protect them from prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Framing can be arranged upon request. If you would like a framing quote or wish to discuss options, please note this when submitting your inquiry and I will be happy to review details and pricing with you directly.
