Geothermal Harmony
The Story
I made this photograph in Yellowstone, standing at the edge of one of its geothermal hot springs. At first, what held me was the color. The water was an impossible blue, clear and luminous, almost tropical. It looked more like something from the Caribbean than from a volcanic landscape in Wyoming. Around the edge of the spring, the oranges and golds of thermophilic bacteria created a quiet contrast against the cool blue water. That contrast stopped me. Not because it was loud but because it felt strangely harmonious. Two colors that could have competed seemed to belong together completely. The blue came from depth, heat, and mineral-rich water. The orange came from life adapted to extremes. These microbial communities, known as thermophiles, thrive in water too hot for most living things. They form colorful mats that ring Yellowstone’s thermal features, creating bands of yellow, orange, rust, and brown depending on temperature, chemistry, and the organisms that survive there. What I loved about this scene was how delicate it felt, even though it was born from such intensity. Beneath the surface were heat, pressure, chemistry, and volcanic force. But from above, it appeared soft, almost quiet. The textures along the edge looked like lace. The water shifted from milky turquoise to clear blue. The orange bacteria formed a thin, glowing boundary between the earth and the spring. I kept thinking about how beauty in wild places is often built from opposites. Heat and softness. Danger and stillness. Barren mineral earth and living organisms. Blue and orange. The surface and what lies underneath. This photograph is about that tension. It is about the way Yellowstone can feel ancient, volatile, and alive all at once. It is about color not as decoration, but as evidence. The colors show heat, chemistry, adaptation, and life at the edge of what seems possible.
Print Options
Meredith works directly, in person, with master printers in Denver, Colorado, overseeing every stage of the printing process to ensure the final work is of the highest quality possible. The materials used are among the most stable available and, when properly displayed, can last well over 200 years before any visible fading begins to occur. Prints are also sprayed with Hahnemühle Protective Spray to protect them from external influences and prevent color fading. This process ensures the best level of print integrity and longevity, allowing the work to be lived with and preserved for generations.
